about

After a handful of albums, seven-inch singles, twelve-inches, cassettes and remixes released on various labels, Stefan Panczak aka Inch-time issues the first recording on his new label, Mystery Plays Records. The latest full-length in this growing discography, The Floating World, comes hot on the heels of his cassette A Handful of Dub, released earlier this year. Despite being very different in tone, the two releases share several strands of musical DNA and this new offering is a clear progression of the Australian-born, London-based composer’s vision.

Inch-time’s serene electronica is near-somnambulant in its quiet grace and elegance, gliding like tectonic plates. From jazz-imbued circular melodies to cascading synths and eerie atmospherics, the brushed beauty of The Floating World finds Panczak crafting dizzyingly effective ambient works, combining a whole raft of instrumentation with sleek electronics and crackling percussion.

This new offering cements a fast-growing reputation, with Inch-time’s tightly-coiled compositions being dynamic and airy; where myriad sounds bleed through the space. A hugely accomplished record, The Floating World soars with intent and its subtle but powerful beauty strikes an impressive, heartfelt chord.

Emerging alongside its sister release The Floating World Remixes is a companion record in every way possible. It contains a series of re-workings and re-imaginings from aficionados of Inch-time, aka Stefan Panczak, the Australian-born and London-based electronic music composer, adding new elements to each recording and making a superb addition to Panczak’s original arrangements.

There’s an impressive cast of names involved on remix duties. Friends, collaborators and kindred musical spirits jostle Panczak’s core ingredients to make something new and interesting, while retaining the heart and stark simplicity of characteristically ‘Inch- time’ works.

All of these serve as illuminating alternatives, each with their own unique touches but also underlining the sublime qualities of Panczak’s own vision. Feeling very much like a family of releases, this remix album is a vibrant accompaniment – both extraordinary records in their own right, this is a fascinating deconstruction of Panczak’s output, and a hugely rewarding delve into cerebral electronica with a playful undertow.
