Shoeb AhmadA hero of the burgeoning alternative Australian music scene, Canberra born singer and producer Shoeb Ahmad’s debut solo record, ‘Watch/Illuminate’, is a masterpiece of ambient drone and gorgeous minimal melodicism. Shoeb is already being dubbed with the tag ‘the Australian Caribou’ and it’s easy to see why… His forthcoming debut solo album (Watch/Illuminate) finds a perfect balance between space-y, cinematic soundscapes and delicate, chiming chill wave pop.

“This mix features tunes by artists I spent the last nine months listening to in the home with my wife while she was pregnant with our baby boy, who was born at the start of September. The best thing about all these artists is they all make music their own way and that it is something I would like my boy to adapt for his life as he grows up. He would have heard all this music through the womb (in Wild Beasts’ case, heard them live in Sydney no less) and he may grow up without any subconscious reaction to it but I will always have special memories for these sounds.” Shoeb Ahmad, September 2011. Inch-timeStefan Panczak, aka Inch-time, might have swapped the environs of Adelaide for the hustle and bustle of London, but it’s a move he’s glad he made. Since releasing his earliest records back in 2003, Inch-time has quietly forged an irrepressible niche which has taken on a life of its own. His subtle melding of gleaming electronica and a whole host of other ingredients – from dub to folk textures, and languid jazz stylings to post-rock atmospheres – has evolved to take in new elements while sticking to the unique approach which Panczak has made his signature since his debut album, 2005’s Any Colour You Like.
Arctic Circle presented a special show on the label as part of their regular program on Resonance FM. Features an interview with Inch-time where he discusses his music, the label and new projects. Also features a half hour exclusive mix of songs from the label.

You may be wondering who did the beautiful and rather intriguing artwork for the cover of our first release The Floating World, and what those mandala-like circles all mean; so we spoke with the designer Stefanie Posavec to find out more…
“I like creating designs that are informed by data and a strict visual process, and it was decided early on that the data found within the album’s songs would be used to create the final artwork. However, instead of directly using the songs’ computer files as the starting point for the visuals, I gathered data from the songs by how they are meant to be experienced: through listening. This month Inch-time digs deep into the crates to explore the World of The Synthesizer. From classics by Morton Subotnik, Tomita and Jean Michel Jarre to contemporary gems by Autechre, Aphex Twin and even Sam Prekop from his latest album Old Punch Card.
MPR001: Inch-time – The Floating World was recently reviewed by Vital Weekly Review:
Stefan Panczak is Inch-time and since 2003 he has been producing music for a variety of labels, mainly Static Caravan and the earliest one where on Lab Recordings. For whatever he started his own label now, Mystery Plays Records, and ‘The Floating World’ is his first release there, and his third full length album. Panczak, originally from Australia, but residing in London, is a man of electronics, keyboards as well as rhythm machines. ‘It was constructed in my laptop with the addition of some acoustic guitar, recorded through a microphone’ and the music is inspired by the Japanese art movement Ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world).
For the inaugural episode, Inch-time dusts off the crates to create a mix which explores his diverse influences, old and new. Featuring tracks by Isolee, Jan Jelinek, John Coltrane, Animal Collective and even a little Gershwin…
